 WSSM EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS CLASS

Many WSSM members signed up at our Annual Meeting to take our next CERT series of emergency preparedness classes.    This is great and we thank all for their interest.

Unfortunately, we have been notified by the LA Fire Dept. (the folks who teach the classes) that they will not be offering any new CERT classes until 2012.

However, Mike Stajura, the volunteer Battalion 9 CERT Coordinator for LAFD and  an  American  Red Cross instructor, has offered to hold a 30 to 90-  minute session on the fundamentals of emergency preparedness.

We need to know how many  people would be interested in taking this class.  Once we know, we can go forward with setting  one up  with Mike.

Please email Margaret Healy at:  thehealyfamily1@verizon.net   if you would like to attend such a class.

Thank you,
Pat Tobias and Margaret Healy

Neighborhood Watch Update

Last March, WSSM hosted a standing room only crowd of Neighborhood Watch Block Captains at the Westside Pavilion.  Bravo to Margaret Healy and Pat Tobias for organizing the event, and a big round of thanks to Steve Heller and Jim Fawcett for their invaluable help in making this a success.

Some of the highlights:

  • Senior Lead Officer Rashad Sharif briefed the group on current community crime and prevention.
  • A representative of CPAB (Citizen Police Advisory Board) spoke about the importance of neighborhood participation and strategies for Neighborhood Watch.
  • Speakers from the Red Cross gave a presentation on emergency preparedness
  • WSSM had new Neighborhood Watch signs printed and distributed to the Block Captains.  They will be distributed to residents.

WSSM is concerned for the safety of the community, and we aren't simply talking about it.  We are taking steps to mobilize the community, and increase the safety of all of us.
